Whiplash Compensation Claims: The New Claims Guidelines

Last year, the UK Government and the Ministry of Justice announced that they will implement the new whiplash compensation claim guidelines this year. On April 2013, no win no fee will replace the win/lose no fee whiplash claims in the United Kingdom to lower the number of fraud cases coming into insurance companies. The government will also be banning legal fees, such as the insurance-law firm referral fees, and will be increasing the Small Claims Court’s compensation from £2000 to £5000.

The authorities formulated the new guidelines after traffic incident reports conclude that a 70% rise in whiplash compensation claims last year occurred amidst a 25% reduction in traffic accidents, indicating a rise in the number of fraud claims. The insurance industry also reported a ÂŁ2 million yearly loss for compensating fraudulent whiplash claimants because insurance companies could not verify the truth in some claims.

Today, the government requires claimants to have two medical opinions from two medical professionals to validate their whiplash injuries. The two reports should agree with each other and show identical results. A threshold of 10km/h speed limit will be the indication of whiplash injuries. The Ministry of Justice also has a medical board to investigate a claimant before awarding compensation.

The no win no fee compensation claims system will also reduce the number of fraudulent claims from coming into the legal system. The independent medical board assures that only genuine claims will receive full compensation regardless of the no win no fee compensation regulation.

Sidechain or Ducking Compression: How It Helps Your Mixes

From time to time you’ll notice problems with your mixes and the bass drum, the supposedly loudest part of most songs, is usually drowned out by the mass spread of frequencies from different instruments. While equalization can get your mix as far as to get clarity, it might lack the energy you want your entire audio mix to have. This is where sidechaining comes in.

Sidechain, or “ducking” as performing and radio DJ’s use the term, is the usage of a sidechain compressor through an auxiliary connection from one track to another. By sending the signal of the track to the sidechain compressor on another track, the compressor temporarily “overpowers” the receiving track at intervals. The attack of the compressor makes the sound seem “louder” through the “pumping attacks”. This practice is widely used in dance music.

For other genres, this is useful especially if you want to put the bass drum front and centre with better energy than being drowned out in the mix. Multiple sidechains with very mild attck and releases can make for a better bass drum sound. In rock and other genres, the “pumping” effect in dance music is greatly seen as annoying, so it would be best to avoid this in your audio mixes.

PPI Claims: Troubles You Could Face in the Future

PPI or payment protection insurance has cost UK banks at least £13 billion in total compensation for mis sold UK citizens, but the worst is not yet over for both sides. The Financial Services Authority has again turned down the banks’ request for a PPI claim deadline. Experts estimate the banks could face a total of more than £25 billion in compensation for 2014 alone.

Barclays recently added ÂŁ600 million to its compensation pool, bringing the entire compensation claims package to ÂŁ14 billion in estimates. Lloyds is still the biggest contributor with ÂŁ5.3 billion in their wake alone.

The Financial Ombudsman currently receives 11,000 PPI claims and upholds 7 out of 10 bank-rejected claims. The FOS says most failed claims are due to a lack of an effective PPI template letter on the part of consumers.

Analysts said that even if the Financial Services Authority were to stop PPI claiming by 2014 amidst wide protest, the lack of present insight can still have the UK facing similar problems in the future. The analysts talk about how the Financial Services Authority handled the financial fiascos of the last few years. With its successor, the Financial Conduct Authority, experts say that its new powers may not be enough to save hassle for customers.

Martine Wheatley, the would-be director-general of the FCA, says that the organization will focus on studying banking and financing frameworks to have a “pre-crisis” evaluation that can help them stop troubles similar to PPI. However, experts see that the FCA only has regulating powers, which would not be helpful and existing market frameworks can become obsolete in the future.

Experts recommend that the FCA instead focus on developing a “crisis management model” that would aid customers in making claims as this is a more probable outcome with future financial scandals. While detection and magnification of certain future financial scandals is a great defense, experts say that the FCA and the previous FSA’s best line is to “keep everybody, including the culprits in-line”.

If you mix down a bass guitar track with the rest of your drumset with proper pre-mastering, you give it more headroom when you mix it with your stereo guitar tracks and vocals. By doing this, the headroom of the drums sound louder or as loud as the guitar, with the guitar tracks actually sounding louder but has dynamics that welcome and allow the drums to breathe properly.

This is a great solution when sometimes you find the percussion instrument tracks, mixed with the guitars and other tracks, sound as if they were “tracks apart” from each other instead of being played in a single session. It also reduces the “thin out” as the lack of headroom does to drum instruments.

Audio Mastering Tips: Listening to Different Speakers

Buying a good pair of monitor speakers may seem a good solution for your audio mastering needs, but in reality, a good pair of monitor speakers are only useful for editing audio and cutting and boosting frequencies. Overall audio mastering requires more than just one pair of speakers. You’ll need to listen to your song in different speakers.

When mastering your audio, you’ll need to focus on three things: clarity, dynamics and loudness. Today’s audio tracks are louder and to keep up with that standard, listening to your track along with a reference track on different speakers can help you find out what’s wrong with your audio.

To achieve clarity, you may want to use a frequency analyzer. A frequency analyzer tells you which frequencies do some of the instruments and other audio in the mix conflict. As you collect data from the analyzer, you can cut and boost frequencies to avoid having frequencies conflict with each other. Clarity can be heard if you listen to your song on a pair of headphones or earphones.

Listening and achieving proper dynamics will require a good set of flat range speakers, and this is where your monitor speakers come in. Dynamics are very much present in the mid-range to low-end bass frequencies. If you are applying compression to some of your instruments, you can hear the dynamics of your instrument through the speaker.

Adjusting loudness means listening to different speakers at times. You can notice loudness easier with earphones or headphones. As some frequencies get muddled in the mix, you can notice them easier using your flat response monitor speakers. The final mastering phase runs with a conventional pair of speakers or car speakers. With the bias, and using a reference track played on a car or radio speaker, you can hear if your audio has achieved radio quality.

FCA Prioritizes Banking Incentive Reforms

The Financial Conduct Authority is placing in top priority the incentives system that banks are currently adopting. FCA Chairman John Griffith Jones states that its objective is to treat the customer fairly and will not ban the incentives system at all.

FCA’s Executive Martin Wheatley, also the managing director of the Financial Services Authority, recently investigated 22 UK banking systems and found fault on the banking incentives schemes. Wheatley was the first to call upon reforms in the banking incentives system to ensure a “fair deal” between banks and customers.

The FCA believes that the banking incentives systems pushed financial advisers and other employees to sell financial products regardless if the customer will have any use for them. Payment protection insurance is one example of the disregard for customers and focus on profit-making. The expansive damage of PPI to the banking industry is reflected by the number of PPI claims the Financial Ombudsman is receiving.

The banking reforms agenda, which is top priority, is the actual response of the FSA as it was asked to give a guarantee that no more occurrences of PPI mis selling, pension scandals and CPP mis selling can ever happen again. FSA Chairman Adair Turner admitted that the FSA was actually a “fool’s paradise” where they have no pre-crisis measures to avert financial crises such as mis sold PPI.

Emphasizing Certain Frequencies in Your Music Mix

Audio is hard to grasp and not as easy as the visual arts. When making music and you’ve found the best sound for your guitar, your piano or your other instruments, somehow, when you mix them together, they sound weak. Sure you could hear everything properly, but the emphasis on certain instruments tarnish the sound of the main instrument. Here are a few tips to help you sort things out and emphasize certain frequencies in your mix.

1. Bus Grouping

Tracks can be grouped together using buses. By doing this, you create separate groups of instruments together. It is important that you consider grouping together instruments that sound nicely together or on the same frequency. For example, a cello or violin could be mixed together in a bus. Drum instruments (the entire drumset sans the cymbals) can also benefit with group compression especially in rock music.

2. Grouping Tracks and Emphasizing the Main Tracks

A good rule of thumb when mixing audio is to mix grouped tracks first, export them then use them again to mix with the main instruments. For example, you could mix the percussion section of the drumset and the bass together to make them less powerful than the guitars. They can still sound decent, but controlled. Then you could mix the individual guitar tracks and finally, once you’ve created a minus one, you could mix the vocals, the main instrument.

3. What Does This Benefit at All?

Given that all the mixdowns have no clipping and are sounding properly, certain instruments retain their frequencies while not sounding too powerful. From the example above, you could still hear the loudness of the drumset and the bass and their entire frequencies, but they do not overpower the guitars, making the guitar frequencies more emphasized. But the most emphasized of all is the vocal section, with full voice and volume while all instruments are heard and given the right amount of life, making a lively, tight mix.
